tip #2 you can put wood directly in the biomass burner and it last longer than leaves do. so until you learn biomass (leaves), save your leaves and put wood in the burners. also, the alien carapace you get from killing the fluffy tailed hogs can also be put directly into the burners.

Here's my tips for the current state of the game.
*Don't worry about optimising too much until end game when it becomes an objective in and of itself. The tech tree is not sufficient at this stage of the development to need more than one mine of every type and one factory producing every type of product. Especially if you find pure nodes. You might at one point have to wait a bit for 50 to a few hundred modular frames, but it's really good to use that time to explore since as mentioned there are some goodies here and there.
*Screws and most mine resource production is faster than the basic Mk1 belt can handle. You can do some very useful, and no effort optimisation just by replacing slow belts with better ones. My last play through was about 20h and I did not need a single slug. Of course optimisation is a mini-game in and of itself, but wait till you can build the best conveyor belts before even starting You first need to be able to move increased production. Especially for the lower tier products. Long before you have run out of easily accessible resource nodes the belts will be the biggest bottleneck.
*Factory building. I find it best to put all smelters and single input manufacturers around the mines for the resource needed to make them. Including the steel smelter. Basically making satellite factories for the basic products. Then use conveyor belts to move the stuff they make into storage at your main factory where all your assemblers are. This is the most uncluttered way I've found to build factories. Having everything together in one building can quickly become a logistical nightmare. Although you can be fancy and make it look really cool if you have it all together. This is true. But I treat the basic products like pipes, plates, wire and beams as the basic resources of my factory. For example around a coal mine I just split the output once and use one stream for coal generators right there beside the mine, build the second belt out to a convenient iron node somewhere between the coal mine and your base, and build the steel smelter as well as the steel pipe and steel beam Manufacturers right there. Steel into my factory. Out of sight. Out of mind.

All very good tips for beginners. I would add, prepare for death and create some duplicate tools since you lose everything on death. Also your corpse loot box will disappear after a while so dont leave it too long before you go get your stuff.
