  • Bon Appétit Test Kitchen manager, Brad Leone, is back for episode 22 of "It's Alive," and this time he's learning how honey is harvested. Brad visits his friends at Bee Local at The Croft Farm just outside Portland, Oregon, to extract honey and test his skills as a bee whisperer.

Join Bon Appétit test kitchen manager, Brad Leone, on a wild, roundabout and marginally scientific adventure exploring fermented foods and more. From cultured butter and kombucha, to kimchi and miso, to beer and tepache, learn how to make fermented and live foods yourself.

This is awesome! I just backed a project on Kickstarter for Kettle Ridge Farms (NY somewhere I think) and my daughter and a friend will get to have a live video chat with a beekeeper while they do exactly what Brad just did. They will also paint one of the hives the colors of my kid's school and send updates after 6 months and then a year to let her know how the hive is doing. Can't wait! I'm not so sure about keeping honey in the shower. I would assume the guy was messing with me to see if I'd smear honey all over my face and then take an hour trying to get it off.

I don’t like the amount of times they jam their finger into the honey comb... like... you know that you are selling that for other human consumption right??? I find it very unsanitary...just me? I love the BA test kitchen and everyone in it! I just didn’t like that 😂

Smoke doesn't mask their pheromones. It simulates forest fire so bees release alarm pheromones and fill their bellies with their storages and filled up bees are slower and more focused on fire than "human predators".

Ryan: Great pelvis action. That's the key to a good harvest.
Brad: Key to a good harvest? Good pelvis?
