Explore neon culture through this local museum project:

Master Wu started making neon signs in the ’80s and has been filling Hong Kong’s streets with bright neon signs ever since. But recently, Master Wu has seen his business slow down as brighter-burning and more energy-efficient LED signs emerge. In addition to getting fewer requests, Hong Kong’s iconic neon landscape is also losing thousands of signs per year, ushering in the end of the city’s neon era.

As Hong Kong’s neon lights start to fade, I spent some time with Master Wu at his neon shop, where he showed me how he makes neon signs, and took a look at Hong Kong’s changing cityscape.

I loved this video, but I have a "weird" question: what was the font used at the beginning to spell Hong Kong? I would love to use it in my projects.

    So neon lights Argon?

  • inquizative44  (Nov 25, 2018))

Neon, argon, helium, krypton, xenon are a class of elements called 'noble gasses,' used in creating neon signs. Each create a different color. Look on your periodic table and they are listed. Don't mind these dumb responses, you asked a very good question. Always ask the question!! This is how we learn.

Vox might have some questionable views on certain topics but I know one thing for sure, and its that their production is top quality.

  • Bruno Pagani  (Sep 24, 2018))

My exact thoughts on this video! Just incredible.

  • seonni  (Sep 7, 2018))

Not really, this one is a total ripoff of an older documentary, "霓虹的製作 The Making of Neon Signs" ( ). *That* one is actually high quality and it goes in depth to show the beauty of it, really interviewing not only the master himself but also other crafters that talk about the value of the master's work in depth.

    you. awesome.

  • Adora Tsang  (Aug 9, 2018))

Neon lights are noisy. It's light and sound pollution. Please don't romanticize this outdated technology just because a cool artisan is still crafting it by hands.I used to live on the 3rd floor above a restaurant in Hong Kong. The bright neon red would flood the living room. The high pitch buzzing it's like 10x a refrigerator. I have a lifetime of sleep problem growing up in that apartment. Poor people who can't afford high rent would live in those units in lower floors. And due to their poor sleep,...

  • Shanjo  (Jan 24, 2019))

Sounds more of a location problem than anything else. The noise isn't a problem if the sign isn't anywhere near where someone is trying to sleep. On top of a building can be fine. Next to an apartment, obviously not. Neon does have something to offer that LEDs can't. However, as the video showed, the reverse is also true. Moreso, to be honest. The downsides to neon signs has been mentioned both by the video and by you. The downside to LED signs is that for all the positives they have, they are the dot ...
