Childbirth is a really common procedure in the US. Around 4 million women will go to a hospital this year. And most births are relatively uncomplicated. But even for the most common medical procedure in the US, the price for labor and delivery is almost impossible to find out before it happens. I decided to try it out--to see if I could get a number of how much my wife's birth would cost before it happened. This video is the story of what happened. is a news website that helps you cut through the noise and understand what's really driving the events in the headlines. If you are an American your best bet if you are pregnant go over to Guam that is where I had my son and I had my son at the one and only hospital though 9 years ago the fees were incredible. Do not go to any small private clinic, there is one large medical clinic excellent they charged me 2500 hundred for unlimited check ups, 2 ultra sounds, included doctor's delivery fee and one check up for my son after birth. The doctors I had were excellent no complaints every step of the way I wanted my son out early asked them to induce and they said they could but would end up with a C-section (NO THANKS) In the end a natural birth, it was so easy 2 hours, no screaming and no pain the doctor was shocked at the end I was smiling and I even thanked him. He looked at me like there was something wrong with me at 43, my first and last baby and my baby all good he was shocked as there was no drama from me. The nurses for the most part great, a very secured wing (LOCKED) and they check you very carefully before they will buzz you in so another fear gone. I paid without insurance for my room, medicine for the intravenous and the little extras 4500 so in total 7,000. I live in Japan and got 3500 back, and so, out of pocket medical wise 3500 plus staying over there for 3 months lots of great and affordable places to stay.

Interesting. I actually saw the complete bill and breakdown for my daughter's birth, even though my cost share was $0, as it was fully covered by the military insurance program, TRICARE. Since it was a scheduled C-section, I believe it was more than a natural birth and less than an emergency-C. The amount I saw as billed to insurance was about $36,000 in 2009.
