“It Is Not Just War. It Is Life”: Acclaimed Doc “For Sama” Offers Rare Glimpse into War-Torn Syria

  • We look at the award-winning documentary feature titled “For Sama,” a devastating account of war-torn Syria told through the eyes of director Waad al-Kateab. She filmed hundreds of hours of footage in her native Aleppo to create a stunning depiction of life during wartime. Amid airstrikes and attacks on hospitals, Waad falls in love with one of the last remaining doctors in Aleppo, gets married and has a baby girl, Sama, to whom the film is dedicated. When protests against the regime of President Bashar al-Assad first began in 2011, Waad al-Kateab was a young economics student who began filming on a cellphone. For five years, she documented her own life and the lives of those around her as the Assad regime intensified its brutal response to the uprising. She eventually gathered hundreds of hours of footage. Ahead of the film’s release in the U.S. next Thursday, we speak with Waad al-Kateab and her husband Hamza al-Kateab, a doctor and the co-founder and former director of the Al Quds Hospital in Aleppo.#DemocracyNow #Syria Democracy Now! is an independent global news hour that airs on nearly 1,400 TV and radio stations Monday through Friday. I live in the west, but this is more American propaganda. Assad is no angel but at least he never backed the most evil people ISIS. ISIS was backed by USA, UK, Israel, Saudis.
Amy I thought you had more credibility than to show this.

For democracy now to have Max Blumenthal on( which exposes both Syrian observatory for human rights and Syrian Network for Human Rights are both funded by the UK) and then to have such propaganda and distorted facts on within this video is extremely hypocritical and tarnishes their credibility....sad

I think Tulsi Gabbard was the only one telling the truth about what was going on in Syria and like how we were supporting ISIS and because she told the truth I think that means that she will never become president. Although she should be.

These people are justifying the ISIS occupation of Aleppo, and DN! is still calling Timber Sycamore an "uprising". Might as well get Marcy Wheeler on here to talk about Hip Hop or whatever at this point. For the life of me I can't figure out how Amy Goodman has become such a propagandist.

Not buying this. It seems like the film on the White Helmets that was also propaganda. Many people on the ground, including Tulsi Gabbord has said the US is funding and supporting Al Qaeda and ISIS in Syria, not Assad.

It's incredible how a channel that gets Venezuela so right, that gets Iran so right, that gets Yemen so right, that gets Palestine so right... can be so dead wrong on Syria and fall for the US propaganda every time. Is this why you never even mention Tulsi Gabbard?

Firstly, I love the way they call them "the opposition", "militias", "military fighters" and "the rebels" without actually stating who these groups are. For that information, we have to turn to Wikipedia - "the Free Syrian Army (FSA) and other largely-Sunni groups, such as the Levant Front and the al-Qaeda-affiliated al-Nusra Front)[83]". We would never know that from this interview. Secondly, when they use weapons, they are no longer the opposition - they are terrorists. Finally, where did the weapons come from, btw? Where does "a rebel" get a mortar? It's not something you can go to the supermarket and just buy. Somebody from outside supplied them, didn't they? Syria and Russiagate have shown us the true, disappointing face of "Democracy Now".

Shame on democracy now for pushing this narrative that we all know is fake and was fake from the beginning. You're a sell out Amy Goodman.
